Olympics (RANT)

Why are the Olympics so important to people?  Like, I understand it's a cool concept; it's the one time all countries can come together peacefully.  But really, the only things I've heard about the Olympics this year are BAD things.  So far, I've heard that someone got run over by a sled and got flung to a roof, breaking both his legs and several ribs.  I've heard that they murdered 20,000 dogs to clear up Russia before the Olympics started.  I've heard that Russia wanted to kick out all the gay participants, and I've also heard that they're banning any memorial toward Sarah Burke, an Olympian participant who recently passed away whilst competing in the Olympics.  My question is, what's the goddamn point?  All they're doing is causing drama this year, and basically every year in the past.

If we care so much about peace and coming together, why don't we try some other ways than having people participate in deadly sports, and feeling like shit about themselves if they can't complete the task at hand?  Maybe they can just take the ruler of each country and have a huge banquet for them, or choose a few hundred people at random?  I actually slightly envy the people who follow the Olympics, along with the people who follow celebrities and their favourite TV show.  It much be great waking up every morning and think, "Oh, I wonder if Canada is still winning." or, "I sure hope Justin Bieber got out of jail!"  People put their faith in such silly, tedious little things.  But what can I say?  You have to put your faith in something.  I guess I'm a little hypocritical because the last five books I've read were all by the same author.

All I'm saying is, I care so little about the Olympics that the only reason I even cared enough to write this was because my teacher told me to.
