The Perks of Being a Wallflower
There's a scene in this film that really makes me sad as well as happy every time I see it. It starts when Patrick is tripped in the cafeteria by someone sitting at a table with Patrick's ex-boyfriend; Patrick stalks toward his ex, Brad, and asks if he's going to do anything about it. Of course, Brad says no, and Patrick makes a whispered and empty threat about telling everyone at the table that Brad is gay (or bisexual, it never really confirms), and he has all these bruises he has because his dad beat him up for it. Patrick walks away, and Brad shouts, "Whatever, f****t." and basically Patrick turns back and decks him. The rest of the kids at Brad's table then get up, and start beating on Patrick. Patrick's step-sister, Sam, tries to intervene, but she's pushed back and then held back by her two best friends. By now, the entire population of the cafeteria is watching in a cliche circle around the fight. Charlie, an old friend of Patrick's, steps in before seeing red and knocks all Brad's friends out.
See, this scene makes me sad for several obvious reasons:
1. I hate the word "f****t" with a burning passion, and believe it is never okay to use, ever ever ever.
2. The way Sam is pushed back into the circle looks really aggressive and painful.
3. I hate how no one else tries to intervene besides Sam and Charlie. If there's a fight, always do what you can to break it up. You might just save a life.
4. I hate the way Patrick is treated. I don't care who your ex is, or what they did to you, you never treat someone this way, especially if just a week ago you said you loved them. Because obviously if you can treat them that way, you never actually loved them.
5. Patrick is initially tripped by Brad's "pet ape" as he called him, because he's gay. I don't even have time to get in to why that's so wrong; it really should be common sense.
But, despite the sad things, there are a few things that make me happy. Them being:
1. Charlie still steps in, even after Patrick and his friends abandoned him because he made one little mistake.
2. Sam tries to step in. Sibling love is stronger than any love.
3. Although it's always wrong to fight, Brad's friends stick up for him when he's punched by Patrick. Sure, they really shouldn't have, but it's cool that they stood up for their friend.
4. Patrick gives Brad two chances to help. Once when he says, "Aren't you going to do anything about this? Your pet ape just tripped me." and once after he threatens Brad when he tries to walk away before Brad calls him a "f****t"
5. Sam's friends try to protect her from getting involved. I'd be pissed if my friends held me back whilst my brother was being beat up, but it shows they care for her safety.
So yes, there are sad parts of this film, and happy parts in this film. Sometimes they're intermixed. But truly it's an amazing story and I would suggest it to anyone.
Why are the Olympics so important to people? Like, I understand it's a cool concept; it's the one time all countries can come together peacefully. But really, the only things I've heard about the Olympics this year are BAD things. So far, I've heard that someone got run over by a sled and got flung to a roof, breaking both his legs and several ribs. I've heard that they murdered 20,000 dogs to clear up Russia before the Olympics started. I've heard that Russia wanted to kick out all the gay participants, and I've also heard that they're banning any memorial toward Sarah Burke, an Olympian participant who recently passed away whilst competing in the Olympics. My question is, what's the goddamn point? All they're doing is causing drama this year, and basically every year in the past.
If we care so much about peace and coming together, why don't we try some other ways than having people participate in deadly sports, and feeling like shit about themselves if they can't complete the task at hand? Maybe they can just take the ruler of each country and have a huge banquet for them, or choose a few hundred people at random? I actually slightly envy the people who follow the Olympics, along with the people who follow celebrities and their favourite TV show. It much be great waking up every morning and think, "Oh, I wonder if Canada is still winning." or, "I sure hope Justin Bieber got out of jail!" People put their faith in such silly, tedious little things. But what can I say? You have to put your faith in something. I guess I'm a little hypocritical because the last five books I've read were all by the same author.
All I'm saying is, I care so little about the Olympics that the only reason I even cared enough to write this was because my teacher told me to.
The 11th of June
She drew her own blood
And that was the last they saw
Anything of the smiling girl
They had all once known so well
The 12th of July
She wore long sleeves in the summer
And they never saw her legs or
Anything other than sad eyes
They would wish they didn't have to see
The 13th of August
She finally made the date
And they didn't even ask anymore
Anything they saw seemed normal
They didn't seem to care
The 14th of September
She didn't leave her room
And she never showed up for school
Anything but normal but
They never even asked why
The 15th of October
She slit her own throat
And she finally smiled again
Anything to stop the pain
They didn't even blink an eye
The 16th of November
She had faded from their minds
And no one seemed to remember
Anything of that smiling girl
They had once known so well
Written in black ink,
As permanent as can be.
She writes with all her might,
"Please forget me."
Wet dots decorate the page,
Tears of sadness and remorse.
"I'm sorry if I hurt you,
But my life has run it's course."
With the pills in her hand,
She swallows them back.
"I'll see you all again someday,
But happiness I now lack."
She failed to realize,
That tomorrow was a new day.
"I have been lying all along,
I've never been okay."
Her mind was filled with rage,
Her heart was filled with pain.
"I know you won't understand,
So I will try to explain."
She continued that note,
Until it was three pages long.
"I have never been happy,
Now everything has gone wrong."
In her note she explained,
The pain she felt inside.
"I have been hurting all along,
But the pain can no longer hide."
With a smile always on her lips,
No one ever expected a thing.
She never knew the happiness,
Her beautiful smile could bring.
At the end of her note,
She had one more thing to say.
"I never meant to hurt you,
And I'm sorry I'm not okay."
This world is screwed.
Everything is going to shit. I don't know what comes after this world, but I know it has got to be better than this hell.
War, anger, violence.
That's
what this world is made of. It's what is strives for; going that extra
mile just to see it's inhabitants suffer and suffer for all eternity.
We need change. Suicide rates are getting higher. Teenagers being
bullied and pushed around. Abused by their parents. Stressed out about
life
It's Hell on Earth, and no one seems to care.
This world is cruel.
It's not right that we have to suffer through this.
What happened to "peace, love, and happiness"? That should apply to everyone; not just the hippies.
I bet within a year, World War III will be activated and we'll all crash and burn.
